Massena is located on State Route 37 which connects to US Interstate
81 to the west, and to US Routes 11 and Interstate 87 in the east.
Route 56 leads to Potsdam and Canton in the south while State Route 420
connects
with the Adirondacks. Immediate access to CDN Highways 401 and 416
is provided via bridge crossing in Massena.
The Massena International Airport, Richards Field, is located 2
miles east of the village and serves as a U.S. Customs Port of Entry
for planes entering the United States from Canada or other foreign
countries. Major airports are located a short distance away in Ottawa,
Montreal
and Syracuse.
CSX Transportation serves several local industrial sites including
the Massena Industrial Park. Operating in fifteen states and Canada,
CSX Transportation serves a heavy industrial and consumer region which
includes six of the ten largest population centers in the country. Typically,
CSX Transportation handles metals, forest products, chemicals, grain,
fuel, automobiles, as well as other local commodities. For more information

Deep-draft Seaway port facilities and stevedoring
services for all types of cargo are found 35 miles to the west at the
Port of
Ogdensburg. This is only 60 miles east of Lake Ontario and 90
miles west of Montreal. The deep-draft berthing (27’) can provide
large sea vessels with access to the Great Lakes and world ports.
A US customs office is located 4 miles east of the Village
of Massena at the international bridge approach in Rooseveltown. All
persons
planning
to cross the border are advised to be familiar with customs regulations
of both countries.
The St. Lawrence River is the primary source for Village water
including some portions of the Town. The water plant design capacity
is 5M gallons per day with approximately 1.7M gallons per day excess
available volume.
The Village sewage treatment facility is an activated sludge type
facility which has the ability to be expanded modularly, if needed.
Development in the Town requires on-site waste-water treatment facilities,
with particular
method dependent upon the quantity of waste water generated, and specific
site capabilities.
Massena is the home of the Robert H.
Moses Power Dam, one of the New York Power Authority's major hydroelectric
dams. Using the 800-megawatt capacity of this dam, the Massena
Electric Department provides some of the lowest energy
costs in the nation and MED reliability is also far superior to the
US and Canadian average.

Natural gas is provided
to the Village by the St. Lawrence Gas Company, headquartered
in Massena. The Company has installed more than 572 miles of gas main
and service
lines within a New York State service territory that is about 785 square
miles, across St. Lawrence County and a portion of Lewis County. As a
public local distribution company, St. Lawrence Gas is regulated by the
New York State Department of Public Service Commission. The Company’s
distribution rates for residential service have been the lowest in New
York State for more than eight consecutive years.
