Massena is known as the center of heavy industry in the North Country, but the community also is a retail shopping destination with many chain stores and small, locally owned businesses ready to provide you with the personal service you deserve. Major shopping opportunities can be found at WalMart, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Office Max and Hannaford Superstore and Home Depot to name a few. Massena Museumkids in museumLocal history buffs will delight at the holdings of the Town’s Museum at 200 East Orvis Street. The facility is chocked full of artifacts that illustrates our community’s rich heritage. The museum is also home to the Massena Aluminum Historical Association and its vast holdings spotlighting the Massena area’s special place in the history of the “miracle metal” which continues to employ so many today. St. Lawrence Seaway Eisenhower Lock

The St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation operates two massive shipping locks in Massena as part of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System. Each year, tens of thousands of visitors view the locking of ships up to 740 feet long at the Eisenhower Lock Visitor Center (there is no public viewing of ships at Snell). The visitor center is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. In addition to an awesome view of ships from around the world, the visitor center is an excellent place for a snack, a souvenir or for regional tourist information. New York Power Authority St. Lawrence FDR Power Project Visitors Center

The Massive 1.6 megawatt Robert Moses-Robert Saunders power project is operated jointly by the New York Power Authority and the Province of Ontario. The NYPA Visitors Center is all-new.  Situated at Hawkins Point across the St. Lawrence River from the massive 1.6 Million kilowatt Moses-Saunders Power Dam, this modern facility includes dozens of interactive exhibits.  Visitors can learn all about how electricity is produced, properties of electricity, energy conservation and more, all while gazing at a panoramic view of the huge power dam.   A film on the construction and operation of the dam and the Power Authority’s role in New York’s electric future can be seen in the on-site theatre.  Admission is free and the facility is open year-round.

Robert Moses State Park

Barnhart Island MarinaBarnhart Island BeachNamed for the visionary who served as the Power Authority’s first Chairman, this great park was created as a public benefit during the power project’s construction. It features a campground, marina, Nature Center, beach and picnic grounds, hiking and cross-country ski trails, all operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. All park facilities are being improved as part of the Power Authority’s license renewal agreement. Also located just west of Massena is Coles Creek State Park, offering camping, recreation and a marina. Nature Center

Nature Center

The Nature Center at Robert Moses State Park is open year-round, 7 days a week. There is no admission fee to the center or the park itself. Hours are generally 8am – 4pm, although during July & August hours are extended until 7:30pm. Trails are open dawn to dusk. The center offers the only paved handicap accessible traiNature Centerl in the North Country!  Inside, the Center features rooms full of environmental educational displays, live and mounted animals, aqauria, a live honey bee display and much, much more. This hidden treasure features the most extensive environmental educational displays in the North Country! Programs focus on environmental education, arts and crafts and more. Miles of trails await visitors, along with an outdoor classroom. Educational panels featuring digital photos and written descriptions lead the self-guided hiker through the gently rolling terrain. During winter months, cross-country skis and snowshoes are available for rent. Lake St. Lawrence Boat Tours

Golfing in Massena
The Massena area is home to a number of wonderful championship-level golf courses.  The Massena Country Club features a beautiful location on the St. Lawrence River.  It is a par 71, 6,600 yard course featuring a pro shop, restaurant and many discount packages.  Open to the public.  Call (315) 769-2293.

Fishing the "Fourth Coast"

Massena is a fisherman's paradise!  Species abound in our three rivers, the St. Lawrence, the Raquette and the Grasse.  Some of our world class fishing opportunities include muskie, walleye, bass, carp, trout, bullhead Northern pike and crappie. Akwesasne Museum and Cultural Center
